The University of South Carolina is offering licensing opportunities for a Dual-Polarization FBMC Wireless Communication System.

 

Background:

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) with cyclic prefix (CP) is today’s most widely-used multicarrier communication system due to its simplicity and robustness against frequency-selective channels. However, it loses spectral efficiency in highly-dispersive channels where a large portion of each OFDM symbol should be added as CP. Additionally, the OFDM power spectrum is not compact, and therefore requires windowing techniques and a large number of guard subcarriers to reduce out-of-band (OOB) power emission. As an alternative, filter bank multicarrier (FBMC) has been proposed to increase the spectral efficiency via a more compact power spectral density (PSD).

 

Invention Description:

This invention is a new wireless communication transmission (and corresponding reception) scheme that provides better performance than current multi-carrier schemes.  Dual-Polarization FBMC makes use of two non-interfering antennas (at both transmitter and receiver) to obtain better performance. This multiple antenna technique solves an existing self-interference problem to provide performance gains in the presence of multiple practical impairments.

 

Potential Applications:

This invention can be used for multiple types of wireless communication links, including:

•       Terrestrial (both indoor and outdoor)

•       Air-to-ground

•       Satellite, and

•       Vehicular

 

Advantages and Benefits:

Using this system can alleviate the intrinsic interference problem in FBMC systems. This enables use of all the multicarrier techniques used in cyclic-prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) systems for channel equalization, multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) processing, etc., without using the extra processing required for conventional FBMC. By using two polarizations, the invention adds an extra dimension to suppress intrinsic interference.
