Immunohistochemical screen that determines tumors with fumarate hydratase mutations

Invention Description:

Dr. John Baynes and Dr. Norma Frizzel, along with researchers from Oxford University, have developed a novel rapid diagnostic immunohistochemical screen to identify tumors that have mutations in the fumarate hydratase gene. The screen can detect genetic mutations in less than three hours and allows for retrospective screening of archival paraffin embedded tumor samples.

Potential Applications:

This invention provides diagnostic screening to identify tumors with specific genetic mutations. It may also be possible to use the screen to identify precursor lesions as cells lose the wildtype allele of a tumor suppressor gene.

Advantages and Benefits:

This invention is a novel screen for determining tumors with fumarate hydratase mutations. Present methods exclusively rely on sequencing of DNA.
